The world’s largest solar power plant is now operational in Abu Dhabi. Located in Sweihan, Abu Dhabi, the plant is equipped with 32 lakh solar panels. Authorities have informed that the plant project titled ‘Noor (meaning light in Arabic) Abu Dhabi’ has been completed.
The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 2.4 million metric tons per year. This is equivalent to removing about 4,70,000 cars from the road. Once fully operational, the plant will increase Abu Dhabi’s solar capacity to about 3.2 gigawatts and power for about 1,60,000 homes across the UAE.
The power plant is operated by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company.
Noor Abu Dhabi project is a part of the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050, which was launched in 2017 to increase the contribution of clean energy in the total energy generated in the country. UAE proposes to increase the clean energy share from 25% to 50% by 2050 in addition to minimising carbon footprint by 70%.
